๐Ÿ‚ 5 tips to transition gracefully

Happy Autumn! ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‚๐ŸŒผ

We entered the Autumnal equinox on Mon, Sep 22, 2025, at 2:19 PM. Autumn can be a welcome relief from the heat of summer. While I will confess that I am not a fan of the cooler temperatures and pumpkin spice lattes, there is much to enjoy about this time of year, such as the vibrant colors and the delicious apples (my favorite is the Ginger Gold apple).

However, the transition to autumn can still be a big adjustment for the body.

One minute, it's 80 degrees, you're wearing your sun hat, and snacking on tomatoes. The next day, it is 33 degrees (yes, it was the other morning), and you're worried about the plants you left on the deck, as well as searching for your winter jacket.

In yoga and Ayurveda, seasonal transitions are just as crucial as the heart of the seasons. They mark a time for us to prepare for the changes ahead (I'm thinking 5 feet of snow with negative twenty degrees ๐Ÿฅถ) while still appreciating the beauty of this present moment.

If you struggle with seasonal transitions or if you want to discover new ways to help navigate seasonal changes, here are five tips to help you gracefully transition to fall:

1 Make a list of habits to release ๐Ÿ“

Fall is a time of impermanence. We see Mother Nature letting go through falling leaves.
Just as Mother Nature lets go in the external world, we can let go of habits in our internal world.
โ€‹
Make a list of habits youโ€™re ready to release. Maybe itโ€™s rushing through mealsโ€ฆ or doom-scrollingโ€ฆ or letting your inner critic get loud. Start with just one habit to release. Letting go now makes space for new energy and better habits to emerge. Write it down and make a commitment (if you like, you can even send me a note for added accountability!).

2 Hydrate: drink more tea โ˜•๏ธ

Autumn is a beautiful time of year to start drinking warming beverages again.

I have been deepening my personal tea practice. I have made tea a part of my daily spiritual practice. Take the time to boil your water, pour your tea over some beautiful loose leaves (I have been enjoying oolong teas, especially this one), light a candle, and be present. The energy of tea and autumn invites you inward, holding you in a loving embrace. Tea shows us how the ordinary, everyday moment is rich in aroma and flavor.

3 Say โ€œyesโ€ to social activities ๐Ÿ‘ฏโ€โ™€๏ธโ€‹
โ€‹
As the weather gets colder, it's easy to stay indoors. Itโ€™s also easier to avoid participating in social activities if we are concerned about being exposed to certain illnesses.
โ€‹
Obviously, you don't want to risk illness, but it's crucial to bring some of the social energy from summer into fall. We are social creatures. If we donโ€™t interact with people, we suffer.
โ€‹
But say โ€œyesโ€ to at least one social gathering in the fall and you'll be rewarded with like-minded community and soul-nourishing connections. Consider joining our upcoming one-day retreat with Keshavacharya Das!โ€‹

4 Add spices and herbs to your diet ๐ŸŒฟ

In Ayurveda, we balance health through the six tastes: Sweet, Sour, Salty, Pungent, Bitter, and Astringent. We should try to have each of the tastes in each meal. Adding herbs and spices to your teas and meals helps balance the six tastes and promotes the movement of stagnant energy to the surface of your body, making room for a healthy immune system as we enter cold and flu season.

โ€‹
Herb to consider adding: dill, anise, basil, fennel, and rosemary. Spices include: ginger, cinnamon, cloves, chili, nutmeg, and black pepper.

5 Practice yoga and meditation ๐Ÿง˜๐Ÿฝโ€โ™€๏ธ

Yoga can be your grounding force, returning you to the present moment. With a few gentle movements and deep breaths, you can free yourself from the stressors of being a human in 2025.

There are numerous benefits to practicing yoga, including increased flexibility, muscle strength, and improved posture, as well as mental benefits such as stress reduction, anxiety relief, better sleep, and a greater sense of mindfulness.
โ€‹
So, stick with your yoga practice, or start it back up if you've been away from it. See all our yoga class options HERE.

they're falling in love with the ground.โ€โ€• Andrea Gibson

โ€œAutumn leaves don't fall, they fly. They take their time and wander on this, their only chance to soar.โ€ โ€“ Delia Owens, Where the Crawdads Sing

"And all the lives we ever lived and all the lives to be are full of trees and changing leaves..." โ€“ Virginia Wolf
