You Are The Universe: Yoni Mudra & Divine Feminine
Mudras are simple hand gestures used in yoga and meditation. Mudras guide and direct energy in the body and the mind. We use them in each yoga class as we open, center, and set our intention for the day.
A thoughtful and meditative way to honor the Divine Feminine is to practice Yoni Mudra. In Sanskrit. “Yoni” means “womb” or “source of creation,” and “mudra” translates to “seal” or “gesture." This mudra embodies deep symbolism related to introspection, spiritual rebirth, and connection with primordial creative energy.
Yoni Mudra symbolizes the womb and female energy and is believed to promote fertility, regulate the menstrual cycle, and balance the body's energy. It is deeply associated with primordial feminine energy, specifically working with the sacral chakra, known as Swadhishthana, which is located just above the root chakra. This energy center governs the ability to create and regulate our emotions and our connection to pleasure.
Practicing Yoni mudra is a way to celebrate a mother's strength and connection to all life on Mother Earth.
How to Practice Yoni Mudra: Technique
Sit comfortably, such as in Sukhasana (an easy, crossed-legged pose) or a chair to practice the Yoni Mudra. Be sure that your back is straight and your shoulders are relaxed.
Bring the tips of the index fingers and thumbs of both hands together to form a triangle, symbolizing the womb, while intertwining the other fingers inward. Place this gesture in front of your lower abdomen, just above the sacral chakra.
Close your eyes, breathe deeply, and focus your attention on the pelvic area, sensing how the creative energy flows and expands. Remain in this position for 5 to 15 minutes, allowing calmness and introspection to fill your being.
You can accompany the practice with a mantra like Om or visualize the divine feminine energy flowing within you.
