Practices of Svadyaya: Self-reflection
As we close this coursework, I hope you have given yourself time to engage in self reflection. Use an inquisitive approach to your practice: be curious, investigate sensation and movement, and be open to possibility.
Observe your thoughts and actions and be curious about where they come from. Are your thoughts arising from social conditioning? From personal experience? From your family experience? Do not judge, just be curious.
Questions to consider in your practice investigation:
Body: From where does movement arise? What is the relationship between thought, movement, and sensation? Use asana as an investigation.
Breath: From where does the breath arise? Can I be in the sensation of inhalation and exhalation? How can I use repetition of a breath pattern (pranayama exercise) to inform my breath awareness?
Mantra: With Japa meditation—repetition of a sound within the mind—can I find the deep silence? When a mantra permeates the mind, it draws awareness in while the outward-going aspects of the mind become silent.
Meditation: The seat of self-reflection. Can you silently observe yourself and your thinking mind? Can you notice as thoughts arise? Can you place space around your thought and actions?
